A Domain Name is the identity by which you want the world to know about your website.
The name that you choose must be one that, either, best describes your website or tells someone about the services that you offer.
You can find a name by going to the EASILY website above and typing some names in.
When you look for a Domain Name don't just choose the first one that you can think of. Take your time and think about it. Write your choices down on a piece of paper and ask your friends what their choice would be.
Look at different variations of the name. For example if your interest is in, say, climbing trees!! then look first for "treeclimber".
Type this name into the Easily box now and you'll notice that both the .net & .com versions have already been taken.
Widen your thoughts to the next possibility "tree-climber". That one is available but you could also see if "letsclimbtrees", "i-climb-trees" or "we-all-climbtrees" are available. Notice that there are no spaces or CAPITAL letters in these names. It's not good practice.
Once you have decided on a name then you must think about the type of suffix that you need. A simple home page will just need a .co.uk suffix but if you want a name for your business then it's advisable to go for a .com name.
It's also wise to buy the .co.uk name at the same time if it's available. This is to avoid other less scrupulous people cashing in on your hard work.
Here's a quick guide to prices for Domain Names (these are for 2yrs):
- .com £35.00
- .info £35.00
- .biz £35.00
- .tv £50.00
- .net £35.00
- .org £35.00
- .co.uk £9.99
- .org.uk £9.99
- .me.uk £14.99
The .biz & .tv names are usually reserved for the entertainment industry and the .org & .org.uk names are reserved for charities and associations.
A good choice for a personal hobby page is the .me suffix because that is why it was set up. The cost of this name should start dropping soon.
Once you have decided and bought your name then make sure that you keep ALL the details you are given in a safe place. The amount of times that I have been told by a client that they have already bought their name choice but can't remember the log-in details or where the name is parked.
The next step is how to use the name that you have just bought.
You'll need some webspace so click on 'webspace' above to find out more.
Once you have read that then get in touch with Webamaze and we'll gladly tell you more and hopefully build your website for you.
